There are heaps of deals around you just have to look and ask for them. If you are after a budget cruise deal you really need to do your homework. Once you know the sort of experience you are looking for and the amount you are willing to spend, it's time to shop around for deals.  Don't be afraid to negotiate a good price, cruise operators need to fill cabins so there is a bargain to be found.

When looking for a travel agent to deal with, definitely find one that specializes in cruises. Cruise specialist companies are popping up everywhere and they know the cruise market well. Some of the larger companies definitely have more buying power.  I highly recommend joining their mailing lists so you can receive up to date cruise deals and special offers. Set up a free email account that solely deals with cruise information and check it regularly. There's nothing worse than realizing you missed an email with a great cruise bargain because it was lost in all your other incoming mail.

One of the key things to finding a budget cruise is to either book early or book late. Some of the perks when you book early include: early bird discounts, free cabin upgrades, onboard ship credit and a better selection of cabins. If you are wanting to travel in peak season, have your heart set on a particular itinerary or are wanting a cabin with a balcony, then it pays to book at least 6 months ahead. If you know ahead of time when you want to travel, take advantage of early bird cruises.

Booking late also has its advantages.  If you have flexibility in travel dates you can often pick up a bargain cruise two to three weeks prior to sailing.  Often travel brokers pre-book cabins and stand to lose money if they don't sell, so they have to sell them at ridiculous prices to get their money back. There are also last minute cancellations which provide cabin openings closer to sailing date which is the perfect opportunity to find a great cruise price.

If you are after a budget cruise the best time to sail is during off-peak and shoulder seasons. Ships are not filled to capacity, so prices are reduced to entice more customers.  If you don't mind the weather uncertainty during these seasons then this will be a sensational cruise deal.  Be on the lookout for repositioning cruises.  During off-peak seasons, cruises relocate to warmer climates.  These cruises generally have more sea days than port days and are usually of longer duration. Generally you have to book early but last minute repositioning cruises are possible to find.

Boarding the Sickest Cruise Ship

I booked a cruise vacation with Celebrity Cruise Line for what was to be a ten day Caribbean cruise with 5 ports of call. As the date for my cruise approached I could not help but pay attention to the evening news when they flash headlines about a cruise ship with the outbreak of norovirus on its last sailing. That ship is the Celebrity Mercury, the same ship I expect to be on a few short weeks. I dismissed the outbreak because of course, they will clean up and all will be well when my time to board comes. BOY WAS I WRONG! Three cruses in a row prior to my scheduled cruise had hundreds of passengers and crew alike sick with this virus. Since I had already had vacation time off approved at work, I decided to roll the dice and go on that ship anyway.

The Mercury docked early from the cruise prior to my cruise. The C.D.C. took an active role by inspecting the clearing and certifying the thoroughness of the ships disinfecting before lifting the quarantine so Celebrity could board the next group of passengers. While I waited in Charleston for the ship to be cleared I saw daily news programs reporting of the virus outbreak, the number of passengers and crew affected, and the on going clean up. The long and short of it is that instead of leaving port Friday March 19 as scheduled, the ship was not cleared until 4:00 pm Sunday March 21. We could not even start the check in process until that clearance was given by the C D C.

As one would imagine, check in was disorganized and confusing to say the least. There were at least 3 groups of people acting as if they are in charge and none seemed to know what the others were doing; or of what instructions either group was giving. Charleston Police direct me one way only to have the Port Police stop me and direct me another, then the people from Celebrity had something else to say about where to go to get checked in. Do you think that this is frustrating? You bet it was. As if I needed another obstacle to deal with, it was raining. Finally, after what seemed to be an eternity, the car is parked and I board a shuttle from the parking area to the terminal where the ship is docked.

This building is a cubbyhole of a building, barely large enough to house the security equipment much less than a thousand people with their carry on luggage. Celebrity employees were trying to direct people into one of three lines that snaked back and forth two or three times. Security personnel from both the Port Authority and Celebrity roamed the area keeping a watchful eye out for anything out of the ordinary. The goal at the end of the lines was to get in front of one of a dozen or so people who were entering information into a computer and issuing the boarding card. Now I did mention that there was more than one line. Passengers with a handicap that required assistance entered from my right and went directly to any open position at the computers; the only time they waited was for another handicapped person. To my left is another line that seemed to have four positions dedicated solely to the people in that line. My line fit in using the rest of the agents as they became available.

Now that I have navigated the maze in the terminal and given Celebrity my completed paperwork and credit card information, I finally get my room card in hand. This card is used for everything; getting on or off of the ship, purchases on board the ship, as well as the key that opens my cabin door. Now I head off to the last stop before I actually walk up the gangway and board the ship. I had to insert my card into the security terminal and have my photo taken.

Once on board it seemed as if I had stepped into a fantasy. I'm greeted with smiles and Hellos from the ships staff. Waiters and waitresses walk around giving arriving passengers a glass of champagne. I also got what turned out to be the first of many squirts of hand sanitizer I would receive on this trip. Yes, hand sanitizer and sanitary wipes every time I entered a community area, along with no less than 2 public announcements each day telling me to wash my hands and how to wash them. Talk about going overboard with prevention. No doubt, Celebrity did everything possible to prevent another outbreak.

Upon entering the restaurant or buffet area, each passenger got a squirt of hand sanitizer and a hand wipe. On exiting, passengers got a squirt of sanitizer. Even shopping on board passengers got a squirt upon entering a shop and exiting every shop and upon entering and exiting the theater.

There were no buffets on this cruise. Passengers went through the buffet lines "cafeteria style" with crew members putting the food on your plate. There was no self serve of anything at all in the buffets; even drinks, salt and pepper, and fruit were dispensed by a crew member. Crew members working in the buffet area wore gloves. Salt, pepper, sugar, and sweetener were in individual packets and served by a crew member. That crew member did not touch the packets. Tongs were used to hand the packets to the passengers. Dining area staff were constantly wiping and sanitizing the tables, chairs, and every area that could be touched.

Do you think that all of this protection is aggravating? You bet it is. Just as aggravating as it is, it is also understandable. I do not see how the Celebrity staff could have done any more than they did to stop this virus. To my knowledge, their efforts were successful.

We are planning a vacation with our young children. But where do we start? What should we look for in a family vacation venue?

What comes to mind when you think family vacation? What about a cruise vacation?

Now many of you would say that a cruise vacation is no place for small children. However, you would be dead wrong!

True, there are some cruise lines that cater to adult guests only. But many of the cruise lines actually cater to family vacations including small children. Most of the large resort-hotel-style cruise ships have tremendous children's programs and activities. In many, adults aren't even welcome in the activity centres - they're just for kids!

Think about it... You have a somewhat controlled environment, children's programming, special children's areas, qualified supervision... your children may not even miss you. And you get some alone-time just to kick-back and relax.

Sounding better? But wait... there's more!

Depending on your itinerary, children can be exposed to new and interesting cultures, see wild-life that they would not otherwise see - generally just be educated without them even knowing it.

At some resorts the dining menu is not palatable to many children. In some cases dining is suspect at best. Cruise ships have menus and eating venues to please the most finicky eaters. From hot dog and burgers to pizza to steak and lobster, cruise ship dining is designed to please. And aside from the specialty dining rooms it's all included in your ticket price.

Most of the cruise lines have a soft-drink program that allows purchasers of the program to have unlimited drinks or at least a very equitable number of drinks for the cost.

And as the kids say lets not forget the dessert! Many ships have ice cream stations that get a tremendous amount of use. In the dining rooms there is a wide variety of desserts aimed to satisfy the sweetest tooth or the healthiest diet.

Is it any wonder that the Disney corporation has a cruise line with a couple of ships to cater to children of all ages? Disney realized that families are taking more and more cruise vacations every year.

So the next time you are planning a family vacation, think about a cruise vacation. It may prove to be the vacation of a lifetime!

Fun Family Vacation Activities For Your Kids

With summer approaching, many families complete the camps, holiday programs for children. Most children, when their choice may choose a family holiday camp several times a week. Why not? This is an interesting opportunity, accompanied by their parents and new memories, and perhaps often the traditional time.

I like things that most children in general, they are easy to find - especially when it comes to holiday activities. ShowSome of the sun, water, amusement park food, in the summer, they were happy. You are not too picky, because they are there, just to get there. You can complain about the journey bit, but if you stay excited, and they can not help but scream in their pants.

Here are five family holiday activities, kids will love:

Water parks in the home: As we want, we can not escape a water park every summer weekend. So why not waterPark at home? Your great "all" favorite Target store, Wal-Mart and Kmart sell water-skiing. Buy some of them bad boys hook to your water pipes, invite your child a few friends, and watching the local water park back into your home. If you have a lucky soul has been in the garden, which is better pool! Fire up grill, turn on some music, throw in the pool with your child's toy and some water to see their faces and special guests. Light you will immediately "Week" and your house will be known as the Central Party School, cool mom.
Theme activity: Play the kids love roller. Try to dress with the theme of the day trips you are starting on them and take their day trip to a completely different level. For example, to the desert on foot / hiking or to a nearby cave or grotto tour. Allowed as a researcher with the Indiana Jones complete your child to do so, he inspired hat. Dressed up like a farmer, and visit the local fruit andVegetable farm, you can choose your own products. If your child likes cars, they dress like a racing driver, and with go kart or travel to an interesting race. If you are looking for something more educational, you put your child to a nearby field, give them a history lesson, inspired, complete with any military tools ..
Weekend outdoor / indoor water park: So, if you really do not have interest in establishing and clearing trouble, you haveWay to do this, a night or weekend trip to a local water park. If you are lucky to live in Orlando, Florida and Williamsburg, Virginia (or any other place quite close to a major Wolf Lodge) and enjoy the two worlds - indoor and outdoor water fun. As a general rule, just imagine that you were back home. Yes, I know it's your temporary home, but it's also the temporary home of two or three thousand others.

Also bear in mind that there will be many different nationalities and cultures on board who may have dramatically different views on what is and what is not respectable. So make sure that you follow the on board dress code at all times.

3) Be Sensible: You're on vacation and you want to have a great time, but don't go crazy with the amount of food or drink that you consume. Nobody likes a drunk and nobody wants to see someone vomiting because they've overeaten. And you'll miss much of the enjoyment of your cruise if you spend your time feeling ill or in the ship hospital with an drink related injury.

4) Be Considerate: If you're not happy with a certain aspect of your cruise, take your complaint to the appropriate member of staff and leave it there. Don't spoil everyone else's vacation by going on and on about everything that irritates you.

So, you're expectations haven't been met! That's no excuse to bore everyone else with endless stories of how your toilet won't flush and how your toast was cold three mornings ago and how the weather isn't as good as it should be. Register your complaint and let everyone else enjoy their holiday.

5) Be Generous: Most of the staff of cruise ships are low paid. The general idea is that the tips they receive from passengers will top up their income. So make sure that you're generous with the tips that you give.

On many cruises, gratuities are automatically added to your on board account. But that doesn't mean you can't tip the people who have looked after you during your vacation. So if you get good service from certain memebers of staff make sure you show your appreciation

6) Be Discreet: So you've done well for yourself. You've got a diamond encrusted cufflinks and a wad of money to waste in the casino. Good for you, but the whole ship doesn't need to know about it.

Not only does it make you seem like an obnoxious swine, but if people see that you've got valuable possessions, you'll attract the wrong type of attention. Oh yes, crime is just the same at sea as it is on land. Human nature doesn't change just because you step onto an ocean going hotel.

7) Be Patient: If you want to enjoy life on board most cruise ships, it's important to be laid back and patient at all times.

For example, at certain times of the day, getting access to the lifts can be a potential flashpoint. You'd be amazed at the number of nasty scenes that arise out of people waiting to use the lifts, especially when they're going to eat or see a show. So learn to enjoy waiting, or if you're able, why not work off some of the gourmet food and take the stairs.

Falmouth - Cornwall is a modestly sized town of over twenty thousand residents. It has a particularly famous harbor--easily the most famous in England. It is famous because it is the third deepest harbor in the world. This makes it, naturally, a valuable and unusual area, as demonstrated by its history.

The town is not as old as some others in England. A castle was built only five hundred years ago by Henry VIII to guard a particularly valuable road and the town sprang up around it. Since it had both road and sea to guard against, it was the site of influence in many wars and had a rich history despite its young age.

The harbor is still the main source of economy. Though fishing is big, it is not as big as it once was. The harbor is now more used for shipping purposes. Another leading factor is cruise lines. This also boosts the tourist trade, as cruises can stop here on day trips.

Cruise Line Comparison - Carnival Or Royal Caribbean?

 Carnival and Royal Caribbean are two popular cruise lines that have strong followings.   Some cruise aficionados refuse to sail on one or the other.   Are there any major differences between them? Explore which cruise may fit your needs the best. For our comparison we sailed on two similar ships - the Carnival Liberty and the Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Seas.


Itinerary   Both ships go to Caribbean Islands like Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, St. Thomas, the Bahamas and St. Martin / St. Maarten. The Liberty also visited its private island Half Moon Cay, Puerto Rico, and Grand Turk. The Mariner of the Seas traveled to its private island Coco Cay and Labadee (the north coast of Haiti). We loved most of the locations that both of the ships visited and don't believe that this should be a distinguishing factor on deciding between the cruise lines.

Shows   Each night there are a variety of shows. Usually you have the main show and some type of entertainment before and perhaps afterward. We felt that the main shows on the Mariner of the Seas were better. On the Liberty we liked the comedian and juggling act. If you love seeing the shows, Royal Caribbean was better for the main shows and Carnival was slightly better for the comedians.

Dining Room We enjoyed the atmosphere of both dining rooms on the Liberty and Mariner of the Seas. We felt that the menu had a little more variety on the Mariner of the Seas.

Friendliness of staff The Liberty and Mariner of the Seas both get high grades. We did have one waiter that complained some on one of our trips on the Mariner. We had a slightly better experience on the Liberty, but feel that both crews did an excellent job and that this should not be a distinguishing factor on choosing a cruise.

Pools   The Mariner of the Seas and Liberty both had salt water pools - which most cruise ships have. They both had pools for kids and adults. We liked the Liberty's pools better because one had a slide. If you have kids, this would be something that they would definitely enjoy.

Spa   We tried the spa on the Liberty and loved it. We did not try the spa on the Mariner of the Seas. Usually you can't go wrong when getting a spa treatment.

Excursions   We enjoyed our excursions on both ships. We're not sure why, but there are very few excursions on Puerto Rico. Both seemed to employ clients who ran the excursions with professional, friendly attitudes. We really haven't run into any tour guides with bad attitudes. Both cruise lines get high marks.

Kids Programs   We met travelers on Carnival that would absolutely would not sail on Royal Caribbean because of the kids programs. We did not feel the same way at all. In fact, we thought that Carnival and Royal Caribbean did an excellent job with their kids programs. There were lots of kids on both cruises.

Age of Clientele   There was a wide range of the age of cruisers on both Carnival and Royal Caribbean. The age seemed to be slightly younger on our Carnival cruise. Many times Caribbean destinations during the summer have a lot of children, so that the age of the clientele is younger. If you travel during the school year, the average age is older with many less children. In general, especially during the school year, Carnival has a younger crowd. This can help you plan if you prefer a younger or slightly older crowd. 

Game Room   Both the Mariner of the Seas and Liberty had a similar size game room.   We do not feel that this was a distinguishing factor, even though it can be an important part of the trip for the kids!

Cafeteria   We felt that the food was more varied on the Mariner of the Seas. The quality was generally good to very good on both ships.

Odds and Ends   We liked the outdoor movies that Liberty had each evening. We thought that the putt-putt golf course was a little better on the Mariner of the Seas. We did not prefer the access to the internet cape on the Liberty. You had to walk through a lounge with cigar smoke for access. We also talked to cruisers on the Royal Caribbean who would not sail Carnival due to too many smokers. We did not find this to be the case on our trips, and thought that there was little difference in the number of people smoking.

The Bottom Line   Overall, for our needs we liked the Mariner of the Seas slightly better. We would not hesitate to book on either ship again, as we thought that both trips were very enjoyable.

Magic Kingdom

As soon as you walk through the gates at opening (and of course you will get there for the opening show, right?), you are walking down Main Street. I suggest that you beat the crowds and get in line at the coffees shop, breakfast spot on the right side of the road as you are walking toward the castle. On our last trip I got a coffee and a banana. There are plenty of other great choices. Don't weigh yourself down with a meaty, bready breakfast sandwich so early, I say. Use this as an opportunity to jump start your morning.

Epcot

Where to start here?! The World Showcase features food, rides and other sights from many places around the world. We started somewhere close to the middle at Japan on our last trip and then worked our way around trying a little from a lot of spots. In Japan they have sushi, noodle soups and curries. There is plenty to choose from and many pretty healthy picks depending on your tastes. They have a faster, seat yourself restaurant called The Yakitori House and a fine dining spot called Teppan Edo.

There are plenty of ways to blow your diet in Epcot, so stay grounded.

Animal Kingdom

What a fun place! Why ruin your day by getting sick after Everest because you ate an 1,136 calorie turkey leg (1) in one of the parks? Keep it light and have some fun.
