Boarding the Sickest Cruise Ship

I booked a cruise vacation with Celebrity Cruise Line for what was to be a ten day Caribbean cruise with 5 ports of call. As the date for my cruise approached I could not help but pay attention to the evening news when they flash headlines about a cruise ship with the outbreak of norovirus on its last sailing. That ship is the Celebrity Mercury, the same ship I expect to be on a few short weeks. I dismissed the outbreak because of course, they will clean up and all will be well when my time to board comes. BOY WAS I WRONG! Three cruses in a row prior to my scheduled cruise had hundreds of passengers and crew alike sick with this virus. Since I had already had vacation time off approved at work, I decided to roll the dice and go on that ship anyway.

The Mercury docked early from the cruise prior to my cruise. The C.D.C. took an active role by inspecting the clearing and certifying the thoroughness of the ships disinfecting before lifting the quarantine so Celebrity could board the next group of passengers. While I waited in Charleston for the ship to be cleared I saw daily news programs reporting of the virus outbreak, the number of passengers and crew affected, and the on going clean up. The long and short of it is that instead of leaving port Friday March 19 as scheduled, the ship was not cleared until 4:00 pm Sunday March 21. We could not even start the check in process until that clearance was given by the C D C.

As one would imagine, check in was disorganized and confusing to say the least. There were at least 3 groups of people acting as if they are in charge and none seemed to know what the others were doing; or of what instructions either group was giving. Charleston Police direct me one way only to have the Port Police stop me and direct me another, then the people from Celebrity had something else to say about where to go to get checked in. Do you think that this is frustrating? You bet it was. As if I needed another obstacle to deal with, it was raining. Finally, after what seemed to be an eternity, the car is parked and I board a shuttle from the parking area to the terminal where the ship is docked.

This building is a cubbyhole of a building, barely large enough to house the security equipment much less than a thousand people with their carry on luggage. Celebrity employees were trying to direct people into one of three lines that snaked back and forth two or three times. Security personnel from both the Port Authority and Celebrity roamed the area keeping a watchful eye out for anything out of the ordinary. The goal at the end of the lines was to get in front of one of a dozen or so people who were entering information into a computer and issuing the boarding card. Now I did mention that there was more than one line. Passengers with a handicap that required assistance entered from my right and went directly to any open position at the computers; the only time they waited was for another handicapped person. To my left is another line that seemed to have four positions dedicated solely to the people in that line. My line fit in using the rest of the agents as they became available.

Now that I have navigated the maze in the terminal and given Celebrity my completed paperwork and credit card information, I finally get my room card in hand. This card is used for everything; getting on or off of the ship, purchases on board the ship, as well as the key that opens my cabin door. Now I head off to the last stop before I actually walk up the gangway and board the ship. I had to insert my card into the security terminal and have my photo taken.

Once on board it seemed as if I had stepped into a fantasy. I'm greeted with smiles and Hellos from the ships staff. Waiters and waitresses walk around giving arriving passengers a glass of champagne. I also got what turned out to be the first of many squirts of hand sanitizer I would receive on this trip. Yes, hand sanitizer and sanitary wipes every time I entered a community area, along with no less than 2 public announcements each day telling me to wash my hands and how to wash them. Talk about going overboard with prevention. No doubt, Celebrity did everything possible to prevent another outbreak.

Upon entering the restaurant or buffet area, each passenger got a squirt of hand sanitizer and a hand wipe. On exiting, passengers got a squirt of sanitizer. Even shopping on board passengers got a squirt upon entering a shop and exiting every shop and upon entering and exiting the theater.

There were no buffets on this cruise. Passengers went through the buffet lines "cafeteria style" with crew members putting the food on your plate. There was no self serve of anything at all in the buffets; even drinks, salt and pepper, and fruit were dispensed by a crew member. Crew members working in the buffet area wore gloves. Salt, pepper, sugar, and sweetener were in individual packets and served by a crew member. That crew member did not touch the packets. Tongs were used to hand the packets to the passengers. Dining area staff were constantly wiping and sanitizing the tables, chairs, and every area that could be touched.

Do you think that all of this protection is aggravating? You bet it is. Just as aggravating as it is, it is also understandable. I do not see how the Celebrity staff could have done any more than they did to stop this virus. To my knowledge, their efforts were successful.

We are planning a vacation with our young children. But where do we start? What should we look for in a family vacation venue?

Now many of you would say that a cruise vacation is no place for small children. However, you would be dead wrong!

True, there are some cruise lines that cater to adult guests only. But many of the cruise lines actually cater to family vacations including small children. Most of the large resort-hotel-style cruise ships have tremendous children's programs and activities. In many, adults aren't even welcome in the activity centres - they're just for kids!

Think about it... You have a somewhat controlled environment, children's programming, special children's areas, qualified supervision... your children may not even miss you. And you get some alone-time just to kick-back and relax.

Depending on your itinerary, children can be exposed to new and interesting cultures, see wild-life that they would not otherwise see - generally just be educated without them even knowing it.

At some resorts the dining menu is not palatable to many children. In some cases dining is suspect at best. Cruise ships have menus and eating venues to please the most finicky eaters. From hot dog and burgers to pizza to steak and lobster, cruise ship dining is designed to please. And aside from the specialty dining rooms it's all included in your ticket price.

Most of the cruise lines have a soft-drink program that allows purchasers of the program to have unlimited drinks or at least a very equitable number of drinks for the cost.

And as the kids say lets not forget the dessert! Many ships have ice cream stations that get a tremendous amount of use. In the dining rooms there is a wide variety of desserts aimed to satisfy the sweetest tooth or the healthiest diet.

Is it any wonder that the Disney corporation has a cruise line with a couple of ships to cater to children of all ages? Disney realized that families are taking more and more cruise vacations every year.

The town is not as old as some others in England. A castle was built only five hundred years ago by Henry VIII to guard a particularly valuable road and the town sprang up around it. Since it had both road and sea to guard against, it was the site of influence in many wars and had a rich history despite its young age.

The harbor is still the main source of economy. Though fishing is big, it is not as big as it once was. The harbor is now more used for shipping purposes. Another leading factor is cruise lines. This also boosts the tourist trade, as cruises can stop here on day trips.

The area has been of much inspiration to the arts and sciences alike. Florence Nightingale worked in and visited the town. Carnival and Royal Caribbean are two popular cruise lines that have strong followings.   Some cruise aficionados refuse to sail on one or the other.   Are there any major differences between them? Explore which cruise may fit your needs the best. For our comparison we sailed on two similar ships - the Carnival Liberty and the Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Seas.

Itinerary   Both ships go to Caribbean Islands like Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, St. Thomas, the Bahamas and St. Martin / St. Maarten. The Liberty also visited its private island Half Moon Cay, Puerto Rico, and Grand Turk. The Mariner of the Seas traveled to its private island Coco Cay and Labadee (the north coast of Haiti). We loved most of the locations that both of the ships visited and don't believe that this should be a distinguishing factor on deciding between the cruise lines.

Shows   Each night there are a variety of shows. Usually you have the main show and some type of entertainment before and perhaps afterward. We felt that the main shows on the Mariner of the Seas were better. On the Liberty we liked the comedian and juggling act. If you love seeing the shows, Royal Caribbean was better for the main shows and Carnival was slightly better for the comedians.

Dining Room We enjoyed the atmosphere of both dining rooms on the Liberty and Mariner of the Seas. We felt that the menu had a little more variety on the Mariner of the Seas.

Friendliness of staff The Liberty and Mariner of the Seas both get high grades. We did have one waiter that complained some on one of our trips on the Mariner. We had a slightly better experience on the Liberty, but feel that both crews did an excellent job and that this should not be a distinguishing factor on choosing a cruise.

Pools   The Mariner of the Seas and Liberty both had salt water pools - which most cruise ships have. They both had pools for kids and adults. We liked the Liberty's pools better because one had a slide. If you have kids, this would be something that they would definitely enjoy.

Spa   We tried the spa on the Liberty and loved it. We did not try the spa on the Mariner of the Seas. Usually you can't go wrong when getting a spa treatment.

Excursions   We enjoyed our excursions on both ships. We're not sure why, but there are very few excursions on Puerto Rico. Both seemed to employ clients who ran the excursions with professional, friendly attitudes. We really haven't run into any tour guides with bad attitudes. Both cruise lines get high marks.

Kids Programs   We met travelers on Carnival that would absolutely would not sail on Royal Caribbean because of the kids programs. We did not feel the same way at all. In fact, we thought that Carnival and Royal Caribbean did an excellent job with their kids programs. There were lots of kids on both cruises.

Age of Clientele   There was a wide range of the age of cruisers on both Carnival and Royal Caribbean. The age seemed to be slightly younger on our Carnival cruise. Many times Caribbean destinations during the summer have a lot of children, so that the age of the clientele is younger. If you travel during the school year, the average age is older with many less children. In general, especially during the school year, Carnival has a younger crowd. This can help you plan if you prefer a younger or slightly older crowd.

Game Room   Both the Mariner of the Seas and Liberty had a similar size game room.   We do not feel that this was a distinguishing factor, even though it can be an important part of the trip for the kids!

Cafeteria   We felt that the food was more varied on the Mariner of the Seas. The quality was generally good to very good on both ships.

Odds and Ends   We liked the outdoor movies that Liberty had each evening. We thought that the putt-putt golf course was a little better on the Mariner of the Seas. We did not prefer the access to the internet cape on the Liberty. You had to walk through a lounge with cigar smoke for access. We also talked to cruisers on the Royal Caribbean who would not sail Carnival due to too many smokers. We did not find this to be the case on our trips, and thought that there was little difference in the number of people smoking.

The Bottom Line   Overall, for our needs we liked the Mariner of the Seas slightly better. We would not hesitate to book on either ship again, as we thought that both trips were very enjoyable.

On our last trip I got a coffee and a banana. There are plenty of other great choices. Don't weigh yourself down with a meaty, bready breakfast sandwich so early, I say. Use this as an opportunity to jump start your morning.

Epcot

Where to start here?! The World Showcase features food, rides and other sights from many places around the world. We started somewhere close to the middle at Japan on our last trip and then worked our way around trying a little from a lot of spots. In Japan they have sushi, noodle soups and curries. There is plenty to choose from and many pretty healthy picks depending on your tastes. They have a faster, seat yourself restaurant called The Yakitori House and a fine dining spot called Teppan Edo.

There are plenty of ways to blow your diet in Epcot, so stay grounded.

Animal Kingdom

What a fun place! Why ruin your day by getting sick after Everest because you ate an 1,136 calorie turkey leg (1) in one of the parks? Keep it light and have some fun. The pre-eminent long-distance ocean route is the Transatlantic Crossing. Today, the Queen Mary 2 is the only ship that has a regular summer schedule on this route, and many travelers are eager to take it. Years ago, when ship travel was the only way to go (actually, it still is!) people would logically take a round trip, but today, although some still do that, it's more likely people would sail one way and fly the other. The question is, is sailing eastbound or westbound preferable? How could it really make any difference? Well there is a difference. Let me explain the trip, and then the reasons for my answer.

Let's first make clear the difference between a cruise and a crossing. Cruises include stops in a number of ports, sometimes almost daily. I've even heard people express their preference for the stops, complaining that if an "at sea" day interrupts that shore routine, there's nothing to do. Of course, some ships do offer precious little to do on at sea days. In any case, on a cruise you divide your time between two experiences, visiting ports and enjoying life on board.

A crossing is different in that there are no stops. The QM2 connects Southampton and New York in six days. The occasional other ship doing a Transatlantic Crossing might connect other ports in a similar time frame. In any case this sort of trip consists of nothing other than sea days, and one's whole concentration is centered on life on board. How boring can that be? Not in the slightest. As a matter of fact, there's not enough time to do everything you'd like.

First there's the dining. Some go to the restaurant for all three meals, but I prefer to have breakfast and lunch in the self-serve restaurants because it's quicker, and I want to do other things. It's the evening meal that for me embodies the pleasure of dress-up dining in the formal restaurant, where you get to meet interesting people, possibly including ship's officers. (Tip: request a large table, for eight, to meet the greatest variety of people; these tables are also more likely to be "hosted" by an officer.) Jacket-and-tie suffices most nights, and a tux CAN be used on the more formal nights.

On the QM2 the day is filled with interesting lectures in at least two venues. Most lecturers are part of an Oxford University program. There are planetarum shows, performances by representatives of the Royal Shakespeare Company, a spa, swimming pool, games all day long, a floor show after dinner, dancing in two venues after that. Or, you could just sit in a deck chair reading and watching the sea. Better yet, a walk on deck will get you to experience the uniqueness in the middle of the ocean of having a 360° horizon surrounding you.

I often ask people on board why they chose a given direction for their crossing, and they say it was by chance, then usually agree with my opinion as to the preferable direction. Of course shipping companies will never tell you which direction is preferable, since they have to fill the ship both ways, but, assuming your travel schedule is flexible enough to choose either eastbound or westbound, here is my answer.

In another context, Horace Greeley famously said "Go West, young man!", and that answer applies here. But why?

The answer lies in the time zones. In the six days the QM2 takes to cross the Atlantic, it crosses five time zones. Picture this. You've just had an enjoyable dinner, and may have gone to see the show. It's about 11:00 and you look at your watch. Is there time to go dancing, especially considering that early lecture tomorrow? If you're going eastbound, you know there'll be a reminder in your room to advance your clocks by an hour, so it's virtually midnight. This is the experience we all have when daylight savings starts and you "spring ahead". It's not much fun.

But on the other hand, if you're sailing westbound and see it's 11:00, you know it's really only 10:00. The evening is still young. How about a dance? This is the same fun we have when daylight savings time ends and we "fall behind".

A westbound Transatlantic Crossing is therefore not only five hours longer than otherwise expected, which is close to half of a waking day, but each of these five hours is spread out, coming just at the right time, improving five separate days. Also note that any world cruise always, always, goes westbound, adding a full 24 hours to that sort of trip. To my mind, it's a no-brainer. Westward ho!

The dream I had of getting paid to travel the world, visiting exotic destinations, making lots of new friends... and just plain getting out of the rut I was in was just too strong a dream to give up on.

Giving up would have also meant that I was admitting failure and giving up on myself... and I was FAR too proud to allow that. Besides, I had already told my family and friends that I was going to work on a cruise ship... and I wasn't going to allow them the satisfaction of laughing when I fell flat on my face!

(There was very little ridicule when they received postcards from me with stamps on them from Barbados, Aruba, St. Lucia, the Bahamas, Costa Rica and Mexico to name but a few)... or phoned them from a beach in Hawaii!)

Unfortunately, MOST people do not show the level of determination that's needed to get hired in the cruise industry and that's simply why they don't get the job.

In our experience, MOST people's feeble attempts at getting hired involve nothing more than firing off a few random, un-targeted resumes by email. When they don't hear anything back within a week, they give up on the whole idea of working on a cruise ship and move onto something else.

(Perhaps in 10 or 20 years time they'll look back on what might have been an amazing adventure in their lives, had they taken it seriously?)

As I'm sure you can imagine, careers at sea are unique in many aspects. Beginning with a seven day working week, combined with the knowledge that you might have to share a cabin with another person are just a few of the truths that go along with working on cruise ships.

Could you cope with the stringent safety regulations on board? And what about the close living quarters for 6 to 8 months at a time?

But once you understand what you are getting yourself into, then you must decide what cruise job will best fit your resume. You might not be adapting your career entirely, but instead choosing a position that fits well with your current skills and experience.

Oceaneer Adventure is divided into three age-specific categories: Oceaneer Club (3-7), Lab (8-12), and Teen (13-17). The Club program is further divided into ages 3-4 and 5-7, while the Lab program is divided into 8-10 and 11-12. Oceaneer Club facilities resemble Captain Hook's pirate ship with plenty of places for activity. Oceaneer Lab allows participants to experience high-tech interactive programs, hands-on science experiments, and ship-wide treasure hunts. Kids 11-12 can compete in a marine biology, knowledge-quest game show and send digital post cards to friends. Teens (13-17) have their own private club, occupying a large portion of deck nine, called Common Grounds - a New York-style coffee house complete with game arcade and Internet Cafe.

In Port Activities

Every cruise with Disney stops at the 1,000-acre private island, Castaway Cay. Here, parents can relax under a palm tree on a white sand beach while their children play in a supervised area or wade in a protected lagoon. The adventuresome can go snorkeling on a course littered with tropical fish, treasure chests and faux shipwrecks (one with Mickey Mouse riding on the bow). Children are automatically enrolled in the island's activities of volleyball, biking, nature hikes, etc. once signed in on the ship.

Babysitting

Children's facilities are open from 9am to 1am. Flounder's Reef nursery has afternoon and nightly hours available on a first-come, first-served basis according to babysitter availability. Rates are $6/hour for the first child and $5/hour for additional children.

Holland America

Holland America offers families a year-round program called Club HAL with counselors and age-specific activities for three age groups (5-8, 9-12, 13-17). Holland America also administers Just for Kids adventure and learning shore excursions while in port. While the largest facilities can be found on Maasdam, Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, and Westerdam, kids will be fully-entertained on all ships in Holland America's fleet.

Age-Specific Programs

All children are treated to pizza and cocktail parties, ship tours, special menus, activities rooms with video games, and wading pools. Children aged 5-8 years can participate in storytelling, candy bar bingo games, arts and crafts, charades, and ice cream parties. The 9-12 year age group is entertained with golf putting lessons, dance lessons, deck sports, scavenger hunts, ping-pong, and karaoke. Age-Specific Program

All Kids Crew kids get to meet the ship's captain at a special Coke-tail party, participate in treasure hunts and sand castle building competitions while docked in Great Stirrup Cay, and enjoy the ice-cream bar, chocolate buffet, and children's menu. There are a host of other activities arranged for kids based on their age. Below is a list of some of those activities:

Junior Sailors (ages 2-5)

Activities include: storytelling, t-shirt painting, arts and crafts, face painting, magic shows, Circus at Sea, and numerous other indoor and outdoor activities.

First Mates (ages 6-8)

Activities include: wacky cooking classes, decorative t-shirt painting, sing-alongs, and poolside, root beer float parties.

Navigators (ages 9-12)

Activities include: Sega and other video games, treasure and scavenger hunts, pajama parties, movies, and camp-outs with flashlights and tents.

Teens (ages 13-17)

Activities include: pool parties, volleyball and basketball, The Newlymet Game, and trivia contests, line dancing, teen disco, and special theme parties.

Every ship also publishes Kid's Cruise News and Teen Cruise News daily, so parents, kids, and teens know the activities planned for each day.

In Port Activities

While docked at Norwegian's private island, Great Stirrup Cay, children are entertained with supervised activities ranging from water sports to volleyball matches to treasure hunts.

Babysitting

Group babysitting is offered for kids ages 2-12 years in the evenings from 10pm-1am and in port from 9am-5pm. Cost is $5/hour for the first child and $3/hour for each additional child. Private babysitting is not available.

Norwegian Cruises also sells Kids Crew souvenir packages including a cup, soda pass, t-shirt, luggage tags, baseball cap, and sunglasses. For teenagers, the package is Teen Passport and includes 20 non-alcoholic specialty drinks, dance and pizza parties, and a farewell bash!

Princess

Princess Kids, Princess Cruise's fleetwide, youth program provides age-specific activities for children aged 3-17 years. The program is divided into three categories: Princess Pelicans (3-7), Princess Pirateers (8-12), and Off Limits (13-17). Princess partners with the California Science Center and uses National Wildlife Federation educational materials on wildlife and conservation with the children. Their Mexican Riviera program includes studies of the stars, ocean, and coral reef as well as building and racing sailboats, marine biology studies, and squid dissection. In Alaska, the Save our Seas environmental program teaches participants about endangered species like white pelicans, manatees, and sea turtles.

Princess offers extensive children's facilities on all vessels except the Royal, Tahitian, and Pacific. The Sun, Dawn, Grand, Golden, Coral, Island, Diamond, and Star Princess offer a toddler's play area. And Princess Kids programs on the Royal, Tahitian, and Pacific only operate when 20 or more children ages 3-17 are on board.

The golden age of transatlantic ocean shipping and travel began long after Columbus' trying to prove that the earth was round. After that time, ocean sailing vessels traveled to the new world on a rather infrequent schedule. It was not until the first ocean steamship, the paddle steamer "Savannah" crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1819 that a new era in travel heated up. Since that time, ocean cruises and ocean liners have become a thing of beauty and romance.

By the end of that century, and starting into the 20th century, ocean liners had established themselves as a status symbol for their companies and their countries on the ocean. A "battle" for ocean supremacy - Having the newest, largest most extravagant ocean liner afloat - had begun!

Cunard Lines had, in the early 1900's two fantastic liners named Mauritania and Lusitania sailing the ocean. In order to boost the White Star Line's (by this time owned by International Merchant Marine) ocean liner position to the top, director Bruce Ismay decided to build not two, but three fabulous liners. One of these monster liners became the most infamous ocean liner in the world. Titanic would enter the scene as the largest and most elegant ocean cruise liner. Her sister ship, the ocean liner Olympic actually entered service before Titanic. These two liners put White Star Line again on top of the ocean liner heap - albeit very short lived as we all know the fate of Titanic.

Ocean Liners to Cruise Liners

The age of the jet aircraft all but finished the era of trans-ocean cruise liners. As the pace of business got faster, so did the travel needs of passengers to cross the ocean. Transatlantic ocean crossings by plane meant hours instead of days by ocean liners. There became a need to find a new purpose for the existence of the liners. Enter the age of cruise ships.

The story of one particular ocean liner perhaps sums up this change. In the early part of the 20th century, the Canadian Pacific Railway Co. had an ocean crossing presence with a fleet of ocean liners. As late as the 1960's, the company had liners built. The "Empress of Canada" joined the fleet of ocean liners after being christened by the wife of then Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. She joined two other "Empress" liners - "Empress of England" and "Empress of Britain".

The Empress of Canada quickly gained a very good reputation for ocean liners because of her stylish looks and amenities. She was a very modern ocean liner fitted with stabilizers and was air-conditioned throughout. During the summers, the liner made the transatlantic ocean run from Liverpool to Quebec and Montreal where she made her turn around. In the winter, the transatlantic ocean crossing was stopped. The ocean liners were either terminated at Saint John, or became cruise liners sailing from New York to the Caribbean.

During the '60's, air travel became more and more popular. The ocean shipping companies had to find new duties for their liners. More time was spent doing cruises and by 1970, the "Empress of Canada" became the last ocean liner in service for Canadian Pacific. She was then only doing 13 transatlantic ocean crossings per year, and spent the rest of the time doing cruises. Canadian Pacific decided in 1971 that it could not retain its ocean crossing business and on November 23 of that year the ocean liner "Empress of Canada" arrived at Liverpool for the last time. After 68 years, the North Atlantic Ocean liner service had ended for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company.

Fortunately, great potential was still seen in the liner. A man named Ted Arison bought the ocean liner as the very first cruise ship for his newly founded company - Carnival Cruise Lines. The mighty ocean liner was renamed "Mardi Gras" and was refitted for her new cruise life. She kept her beautiful external profile, but the liner did lose her cargo cranes that would no longer be required as a cruise liner. Carnival decided to even keep the general pattern of the Canadian Pacific ocean liner's funnel identification and reworked it to identify the cruise liner as the new Carnival cruise ship.

The cruise liner had a very shaky start with the company losing money in the early years. However, a couple of years later Carnival Cruise Lines progressively introduce the "Fun Ships" concept and spent a whopping (at that time) 10 million dollars in converting their ocean liner Mardi Gras. In order to maintain their business (having only one cruise ship), Carnival kept the liner operating while the renovations were being completed - closing off areas of construction and thus having only about 60 percent cruise ship occupancy available while on the ocean and seas.

Things started to turn around for Carnival Cruise Lines and by the mid '70's they were having great success marketing the cruise liner in Canada and the U.S. In December of 1975, Carnival purchased their second cruise ship - the ocean liner "Queen Anna Maria". Oddly enough, this liner had been originally named the "Empress of Britain". That's right, after many years, the two sister ocean liners from Canadian Pacific Railway were again in the same fleet cruising the oceans together. She was renamed "Carnivale" by the company and the two liners were very successful.

In 1977, a third cruise ship was bought for the fleet and named "Festivale". Carnival now had a "Golden Fleet" of 3 cruise liners sailing the oceans and was still growing in success.

Carnival ordered their first new-build cruise liner which entered service in 1982 and was named the cruise ship "Tropicale". From that time, Carnival Cruise Lines never looked back.

Thus the age of transatlantic ocean liners carrying travelers from one destination to another had transformed into an age of cruise liners transporting vacationers on exotic ocean itineraries. Ocean crossings still exist from the New World to the Old World, but now they are for relaxing vacations, and are quite often re-positioning cruises by the cruise lines.
